How to Protect Yourself from the "Grandparent" Scam

How Seniors Can Outsmart the “Grandparent Scam” and Protect Their Finances

It often begins with a phone call in the middle of the night. A worried voice says, “Grandma, it’s me. I’m in trouble and need money right away.”

This is what’s known as the grandparent scam, one of the most common schemes targeting older adults. Scammers count on kindness and quick reactions. They use fear to rush you into sending money before you can think clearly.

Here’s how it usually works. Someone pretends to be your grandchild or another relative. They claim there has been an accident or arrest and that they need your help right now. They might say, “Please don’t tell Mom or Dad,” to stop you from checking the story. Then they ask you to send money through a wire transfer, gift card, or cryptocurrency because those payment methods are hard to trace or recover.

If this ever happens to you, remember that urgency is a warning sign. Watch for other clues that something is wrong. Be cautious if someone tells you to keep a secret, pressures you to act fast, or asks for payment in a strange way. Sometimes the voice sounds a little different, or the caller avoids using names and details.

Ray Catala, VivaValet’s Senior Tech Expert, offers this advice:

“Remember, if you receive an urgent call asking for money or your personal information, stay calm. Hang up and reach out to a trusted friend or family member. Taking a moment to double-check can stop scammers in their tracks and protect you, your information, and your finances.”

A few simple tools can make a big difference. Use caller ID and call-blocking apps to filter unknown numbers. Create a family “code word” that only your real relatives know. Review your social media privacy settings so strangers cannot see personal details that scammers might use.

At VivaValet, we believe staying connected should always feel safe. Our team helps seniors use technology with confidence, from setting up call protections to spotting scam attempts before they happen.

Scammers depend on confusion and fear. By slowing down, checking the facts, and knowing what to look for, you can stop them before they succeed. Awareness is your best defense, and with a little help and guidance, you can keep your information and your peace of mind protected.
